September Book of the Month- Bad Blood by John Carreyrou
Somehow it is already September and summer is quickly coming to end. There is nothing I love more than leisurely reading a quick-reading novel by the pool or at the beach. But as the summer winds down I am excited to immerse myself in some new books starting with one I have been longing to read since its release early this year, Bad Blood, Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup. Written by Wall Street Journal award-winning journalist John Carreyrou, Bad Blood tells the inside story of the amazing rise of fall of Theranos, a startup company founded by CEO Elizabeth Holmes.Theranos promised to revolutionize the medical industry with a machine that would make blood testing significantly faster and easier. The technology was impressive, Theranos claimed it could take a few drops of blood from a simple finger prick to detect everything from H.I.V. to a diabetic’s A1C level. Relying on a proprietary technology to analyze the small quantities of blood, the private company offered a wide array of tests much more cheaply than existing blood tests. The innovative technology grabbed the attention of big-name venture capitalists and companies such as Walgreens. Even their board members which included former US senators and two former secretaries of state were blinded by the promise of the technology and the charismatic and dynamic leadership of Elizabeth Holmes. Theranos sold shares in a fundraising round that valued the company at more than $9 billion, putting Holmes’s worth at an estimated $4.7 billion. Many considered Elizabeth Homes to be the next Steve Jobs but there was one huge problem, the technology didn’t work. You may have heard about the scandal when it first broke in 2017 but Bad Blood takes you deep into the lies and deception. John Carreyrou’s riveting reporting helped expose one of the greatest corporate fraud cases since Enron. You won’t want to put this book down. If you have read Bad Blood we would love to hear your thoughts in the comments below or let us know what you are currently reading. xo, Danielle
